Web Design - Information
Why do you want a presence on the World Wide Web?
- If you work as a small business or an artist, it is a good way to display
and advertise your work
- You can instantly refer potential clients to your site
- It doesn’t get as tatty as a brochure
or portfolio. Though just like printed information it needs to be kept
updated.
- It is cheaper to update a website than order a brochure reprint
- A good website design and layout gives a professional impression
- You can add links that easily enable people to find your studio
- Your site is viewable world-wide
What are the problems of a web site?
- It needs to be regularly updated, or it
falls out of favour with the search engines (This is because the search
engines routinely send out ‘crawlers’ to
check for changes on sites)
- If your domain is to be found by the search
engines, your site needs to have an optimised structure – including relevant page titles
and keywords. These titles and keywords do not show up on the screen,
they run in the background in the ‘source’ area (Go to View
then Source on any web page to see this)
- A site of at least 5 pages is more readily found in a search
- Having bought your domain name, paid for hosting, then uploaded your
site; there is some delay before it is accessible on the web. It is not
an overnight event
