The Portraits
Three of the ceramic portraits were created for the Bonsall weekend of the Wirksworth Festival in 2005.
Having always had a penchant to draw the figure, modelling in clay is for me a rewarding process.
In our world of instant and perfect photographic imagery, this ability has less significance than it perhaps once would have done.
Commissions for portraits of individuals start at around £400.

Terra Sigilata
The Terra Sigilata finish on the ‘Youth’ portrait means ‘earth seal’. It is a clay slip, refined to remove larger clay particles. The resulting slip is brushed on in several layers to the unfired clay and then burnished and fired to the resultant sheen. It can be further enhanced by wax polishing. The finish is closer to polished stone than a glaze finish.
